Adding Insulation or Using Insulated Panels: Two Options for Mobile Home Owners

If you want to add insulation to the roof of your mobile home, there are a few different options you can explore. Two of the main options are filling the attic space under your existing roof with extra insulation or adding insulated roof panels. Here's a look at details of both of these options:

Adding Insulation Under the Existing Roof

If your mobile home has the metal roof it was manufactured with, you can easily add insulation to it. Crawl on top of the roof, and find the middle of it. Cut a hole in the roofing using a chisel and hammer, and carefully pull back the material, wearing gloves to protect your hands. Move aside any existing insulation, and you should see the center truss of the roof.

At that point, you need to slide an insulation fill tube attached to a blower and a reservoir of cellulose insulation into the hole. Gently, push the tube forward until it reaches one of the corners of the mobile home's roof space. Then, turn on the blower. As the machine blows out insulation, slowly pull the tube back. Repeat this process in all four corners. Then, patch the hole you cut in the roof.

Ideally, unless you are a skilled contractor, you should not try this on your own. Rather, you should contact a roofing insulation specialist.

Adding Insulated Panels

Instead of adding insulation under your existing roof, you can opt to add insulated roofing panels to your mobile home. This is more expensive than the other option, but there is no need to worry about the patch leaking, and you gain a much improved roof.

Insulated roof panels for mobile homes feature an sheet of insulated foam attached to a sheet of metal roofing. Depending on the design, the panels feature an aluminium edge that can be connected directly to your mobile home's frame -- that prevents screws from being put through the roofing material. The panels can be added over your existing roof so you don't have to worry about removal costs, and the metal on the top comes with a high-gloss surface that reflects sunlight, helping to keep your mobile home cooler in the summer. Additionally, you can choose from a range of colours so you get the style you want.
